The MMA4Z00-NS400, MMA1Z00-NS400 and MMS4X00-NS400 are all 400G NVIDIA optics, and buyers mix them up constantly. They differ on two things: the cage they plug into (OSFP or QSFP112) and the fiber they run on (multimode or single-mode). The MMA4Z00-NS400 is OSFP, multimode, up to 50 m, for ConnectX-7 adapters with OSFP cages. The MMA1Z00-NS400 is the same multimode optic in a QSFP112 shell, for ConnectX-7 QSFP112 adapters and BlueField-3 DPUs. The MMS4X00-NS400 is OSFP like the first, but single-mode, reaching 500 m. Choose the cage your adapter has, then the fiber your distance needs.
Below: the three side by side, how to tell which cage you have, what each pairs with on the switch, and which fiber goes with which.
Short answer: match the cage first, then the fiber

Step 1: Which Cage Does Your Adapter Have?
NVIDIA offers 400G ConnectX-7 adapters in both QSFP112 and OSFP versions, and BlueField-3 in QSFP112 only. The two cages are not interchangeable. NVIDIA's cable guide says plainly that OSFP cages are not compatible with QSFP devices and that no QSFP-to-OSFP adapter is offered. Quick checks:
- Size. An OSFP cage is visibly wider and taller than a QSFP cage. If a standard QSFP28 or QSFP56 cable fits the port, it is QSFP112, not OSFP.
- BlueField-3. Always QSFP112. NVIDIA's MMA4Z00-NS400 documentation says OSFP is not for use in BlueField-3 DPUs. This is the most common wrong order.
-
The part number. The adapter's ordering part number (shown by
mlxfwmanageror on the card's label) identifies the cage. Look it up in NVIDIA's ConnectX-7 documentation if the port isn't obvious.
More on why the cages differ: OSFP vs QSFP-DD and OSFP vs DAC vs AOC.
Step 2: Multimode or Single-Mode?
Once the cage is settled, distance picks the optic:
- Within a row (up to 50 m): SR4 on multimode fiber, the MMA4Z00-NS400 or MMA1Z00-NS400. It is the lower-cost path and the one most clusters use.
- Across rows or rooms (up to 500 m): DR4 on single-mode fiber, the MMS4X00-NS400.
The two don't talk to each other. SR4 runs 850nm on multimode fiber; DR4 runs 1310nm on single-mode. Both ends of a link must use the same optical type, so a building with both needs both, connected through switches. All three use MPO-12/APC connectors, the angled-polish type. Existing UPC fiber won't mate cleanly; see MPO-12/APC vs UPC.
Step 3: What Goes on the Other End
| Link | Adapter end | Other end | Fiber |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adapter to adapter, multimode | MMA4Z00-NS400 or MMA1Z00-NS400 | MMA4Z00-NS400 or MMA1Z00-NS400 (either cage) | MPO-12/APC OM4 straight, from $59 |
| Adapter to Quantum-2 switch, multimode | MMA4Z00-NS400 or MMA1Z00-NS400 | MMA4Z00-NS 800G twin-port SR8, finned-top ($829), feeding two adapters | Two straight OM4 cables, or a 1:2 splitter |
| Adapter to adapter, single-mode | MMS4X00-NS400 | MMS4X00-NS400 | MPO-12/APC OS2 straight, from $55 |
| Adapter to Quantum-2 switch, single-mode | MMS4X00-NS400 | MMS4X00-NM 800G twin-port 2×DR4 ($999), feeding two adapters | Two straight OS2 cables |
Two rules from that table: adapters take flat-top modules and air-cooled switches take finned-top, and one 800G twin-port switch module serves two 400G adapters. The SR4 optics in OSFP and QSFP112 share the same optical interface, so an OSFP adapter and a QSFP112 adapter can link to each other over the same multimode fiber. For the full flat-top and finned-top story, see Flat-top or finned-top OSFP? For the 1:2 splitter, see our custom MPO-12/APC splitter build.
The Three Most Common Wrong Orders
- An OSFP optic for a BlueField-3. It won't fit. BlueField-3 takes QSFP112, so order the MMA1Z00-NS400.
- A DR4 on one end and an SR4 on the other. Different wavelengths and fibers mean no link. Match the optic type on both ends.
- A finned-top module for an adapter. ConnectX-7 and BlueField-3 take flat-top shells. Finned-top belongs in air-cooled switches.

FAQ
What is the difference between MMA4Z00-NS400 and MMA1Z00-NS400?
The cage. Both are 400G SR4 optics running 850nm over multimode fiber with an MPO-12/APC connector. The MMA4Z00-NS400 is an OSFP module for ConnectX-7 adapters with OSFP cages. The MMA1Z00-NS400 is a QSFP112 module for ConnectX-7 adapters with QSFP112 cages and for BlueField-3 DPUs, which take QSFP112 only. Neither fits the other's cage, and NVIDIA offers no adapter between OSFP and QSFP.
What is the difference between MMA4Z00-NS400 and MMS4X00-NS400?
The fiber and the reach. Both are 400G OSFP flat-top modules for ConnectX-7. The MMA4Z00-NS400 is SR4: 850nm over multimode fiber, up to 50 m on OM4. The MMS4X00-NS400 is DR4: 1310nm over single-mode fiber, up to 500 m. The two cannot link to each other; each end of a link must use the same optical type.
Does a BlueField-3 DPU take the MMA4Z00-NS400?
No. NVIDIA offers BlueField-3 in QSFP112 only, and its MMA4Z00-NS400 documentation states OSFP is not for use in BlueField-3 DPUs. For a 400G multimode link from a BlueField-3, use the QSFP112 MMA1Z00-NS400.
Can an MMA1Z00-NS400 link to an MMA4Z00-NS400?
Yes. Both are 400G SR4 optics on 850nm multimode fiber with MPO-12/APC connectors, so a QSFP112 adapter and an OSFP adapter can be linked with a straight MPO-12/APC multimode cable, the role NVIDIA's MFP7E10 cable plays. The form factors differ only at the cage on each end.
What switch-side optic pairs with these 400G adapter optics?
On a Quantum-2 or other twin-port 800G OSFP switch, the multimode SR4 optics (MMA4Z00-NS400 and MMA1Z00-NS400) pair with the 800G MMA4Z00-NS twin-port SR8, one switch module feeding two 400G adapters. The single-mode MMS4X00-NS400 pairs with the 800G MMS4X00-NM twin-port 2×DR4. Switch-side modules are finned-top; adapter-side modules are flat-top.
