Why this part exists, and why people order the wrong one
NVIDIA's NDR generation ships 400G SR4 optics in two different shells. The optics inside are the same: 4 × 100G-PAM4, 850nm VCSEL, one MPO-12/APC connector, 50m on OM4. The cage is not.
- MMA1Z00-NS400 — QSFP112. This part, $549.00. For BlueField-3 DPUs and ConnectX-7 adapters in their QSFP112 form.
- MMA4Z00-NS400 — OSFP, flat-top (RHS), $579.00. For ConnectX-7 and ConnectX-8 single-port OSFP.
The two part numbers differ by one character, describe themselves almost identically on a datasheet, and differ in the single thing that decides whether the module physically seats.
The rule worth memorising: a BlueField-3 never takes OSFP. NVIDIA states plainly that BlueField-3 adapters accept QSFP112 devices only, and that OSFP is not for use in BlueField-3 DPUs. If a BlueField-3 line is on your PO and someone has quoted you an MMA4Z00-NS400 against it, that quote is wrong — the module will not go in.

NVIDIA documents this module in the same two topologies as its OSFP sibling. In both, the far end is a twin-port 800G module in the switch — the MMA4Z00-NS in a Quantum-2 InfiniBand or Spectrum-4 Ethernet switch.

Both fibers on the twin-port switch module must be the same type — two straight cables or two splitters, never one of each. And a splitter does not give you 400G per leg: each split end carries two of the four channels, so the adapter negotiates down to 200G silently, with nothing to flag it. The fiber it needs
Same fiber as the OSFP part, and the same trap: MPO-12/APC — angle-polished at 8°, Type B crossover, female/unpinned. The module carries the alignment pins; the cable carries the holes.
The MPO-12/UPC cords in an existing 100G or 200G fabric are flat-polished and cannot mate with an NDR module. If you are upgrading rather than building new, none of your current MPO patch cords come forward with you — budget the fiber alongside the optics. Good to know
- QSFP112 is not QSFP-DD, and not QSFP56. It carries four 100G-PAM4 lanes in a QSFP-sized shell. A QSFP-DD module will not seat in it and vice versa — see OSFP vs QSFP-DD for where each form factor lives.
- Flat-top and finned-top do not apply here. That distinction belongs to the OSFP family, where the question is whether the module or the cage carries the heatsink. QSFP112 has one shape. If someone is asking you which top style you need on a QSFP112 part, they are quoting from the wrong family — here is the rule that actually applies.
- Reach is the module's, not the channel's. The 50 m OM4 figure already assumes patch panels in the path, which is four connector junctions. More hops means less usable distance.
- Coding matters more than the glass. A module that is not coded for the specific host platform can be flagged or rejected even when the optics are perfect — what to check before buying compatible NDR optics.
- If the run is short enough, skip the optics. Copper sidesteps the coding and fiber questions entirely — where that line falls.
