A refurbished Dell PowerEdge R640 is a 1U, two-socket server for 2nd-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors. It takes up to 3TB of memory across 24 slots, and up to three low-profile NVIDIA T4 GPUs. Resilient Tec has three R640 builds in stock: $1,569.75 for an entry Silver 4208 build, $2,472.50 for a Gold 6226 build with 128GB and SAS storage, and $3,990.50 for the same Gold 6226 build with all-flash storage. Each ships tested, with rails, a bezel and a lifetime warranty.
Below: what is in each build, which one fits which job, what you can change before it ships, and when you should be looking at a 2U R740xd instead.
Short answer: three builds, from $1,569.75
Refurbished Dell R640 from $1,569.75 at Resilient Tec
Choose by workload. The Silver 4208 build is a capable first server, branch-office host or firewall. The Gold 6226 builds double the cores per processor, quadruple the memory and add a cached RAID controller and 10GbE, for virtualization and databases. Pick the SSD version when storage latency matters more than capacity.

Which R640 Should You Buy?
Silver 4208 build — $1,569.75
The entry point, and still a full enterprise server: dual processors, redundant power, hardware RAID, mirrored boot and iDRAC Enterprise for remote management. It suits a first Proxmox or ESXi node, a branch-office file, AD or backup host, or a pfSense or OPNsense appliance. The H330 has no cache, so it is not the controller for heavy write workloads. With 24 slots, 32GB is a starting point, not a ceiling.
Gold 6226 with SAS — $2,472.50
The workhorse. Moving to Gold 6226 gives you 50% more cores per socket at a higher clock. You also get 128GB installed, the H740p with 8GB of non-volatile cache, and 10GbE SFP+. That is the right base for a VMware, Proxmox or Hyper-V host running a few dozen VMs, or a database and line-of-business application server. For $902.75 more than the Silver build, you get four times the memory and a much stronger RAID controller. With server memory prices up sharply through 2025 and 2026, installed and tested memory is a large part of that difference.
Gold 6226 with SSD — $3,990.50
The same server with four 1.92TB SATA SSDs in place of the spinning SAS drives. Raw capacity is about the same; random I/O is in a different class. Choose this build when storage latency is what holds your workload back: busy VMs, databases, CI runners. If you need capacity more than speed, the SAS build plus SSDs in the four open bays later is the flexible route.
What You Can Change Before It Ships
Every build can be customized. Common changes:
- More memory. All 24 DIMM slots are usable with both processors installed. Dell rates the R640 for up to 1.5TB with RDIMMs or 3TB with LRDIMMs.
- More or faster storage. Fill the four open bays, or swap the SAS drives for SSDs.
- Faster networking. Change to 25GbE.
- Processor and controller upgrades on the Silver build, to Gold processors or the H740p.

Can the R640 Run a GPU?
Yes, within limits. Dell supports up to three single-width NVIDIA T4 16GB cards in the R640 with both processors installed. The T4 is a 70 W, low-profile card powered entirely from its PCIe slot, so it needs no GPU power cables. That suits inference, video transcoding and VDI in 1U. Resilient Tec has a refurbished Dell NVIDIA T4 16GB for $849.
Double-width GPUs such as the A40 or V100 do not fit a 1U chassis. If your plan involves one of those, start from a 2U R740xd GPU Ready build ($2,995) and read Custom Dell R740xd GPU servers. For what goes wrong when a GPU is installed in a Dell or HPE server, see Why Your GPU Won't Work in Your Server.
R640 or R740xd?
| PowerEdge R640 | PowerEdge R740xd | |
|---|---|---|
| Height | 1U | 2U |
| Processors | 2× 1st/2nd-gen Xeon Scalable | 2× 1st/2nd-gen Xeon Scalable |
| Memory slots | 24 | 24 |
| PCIe slots | Low-profile | Full-height, including double-width GPU slots |
| GPUs | Up to 3 single-width (T4) | Double-width cards such as the A40 with the right risers and power cables |
| Best for | Dense compute, virtualization, network services | Storage-heavy hosts and GPU builds |
| From (Resilient Tec) | $1,569.75 | $2,995 (GPU Ready, no GPU) |
The rule of thumb: if rack space and power are the constraint, buy the R640. If drives or a full-size GPU are the constraint, buy the R740xd.
FAQ
How much does a refurbished Dell PowerEdge R640 cost?
At Resilient Tec, refurbished R640 builds start at $1,569.75 for two Xeon Silver 4208 processors, 32GB, a PERC H330 and four 2TB SAS drives. Two Xeon Gold 6226 processors with 128GB and a PERC H740p are $2,472.50 with four 2TB SAS drives, or $3,990.50 with four 1.92TB SSDs. All three are in stock at Resilient Tec with a lifetime warranty. (Prices checked October 19, 2026.)
Where can I buy a refurbished Dell R640?
Directly from Resilient Tec, shipping from Knoxville, Tennessee, with POs and net terms available. Three configurations are in stock: R640 with Silver 4208 and 32GB, $1,569.75, R640 with Gold 6226, 128GB and SAS, $2,472.50, and R640 with Gold 6226, 128GB and SSD, $3,990.50. Each is refurbished, ships with rails and a bezel, and carries a lifetime warranty. (Prices checked October 19, 2026.)
Can you put a GPU in a Dell R640?
Yes, a low-profile, single-width one. Dell supports up to three NVIDIA T4 16GB cards in the R640 with both processors installed. Each T4 draws 70 W from its slot, so no GPU power cables are needed. Double-width cards such as the A40 or V100 do not fit a 1U chassis; for those, use an R740xd.
How much memory does a Dell R640 support?
The R640 has 24 DIMM slots across two processors. Dell rates it for up to 3TB with LRDIMMs, or 1.5TB with registered RDIMMs, and all 24 slots need both processors installed. Our Gold 6226 builds ship with 128GB, and our Silver 4208 build ships with 32GB, leaving plenty of slots free to grow.
What is the difference between the Dell R640 and R740xd?
Height and expansion. The R640 is a 1U server with low-profile PCIe slots, up to 10 small-form-factor drive bays depending on chassis, and room for single-width GPUs like the T4. The R740xd is 2U, with far more drive bays and full-height slots that take double-width GPUs such as the A40. Choose the R640 for dense compute and virtualization, and the R740xd for storage-heavy or GPU builds.
Does a refurbished R640 come with an operating system?
No. Our R640 builds ship without an OS. The R640 supports Windows Server, VMware ESXi, Proxmox, Red Hat, Ubuntu and other major Linux distributions. Every build includes a BOSS-S1 card with two mirrored 240GB M.2 SSDs for the OS, keeping the front bays free for data, and iDRAC Enterprise for remote installation.
What warranty comes with a refurbished R640 from Resilient Tec?
The Resilient Tec lifetime warranty. If a part fails, we send an advance replacement when we have one in stock, or repair or replace the unit with an equivalent.
