This part is one of the more confusing line items in NVIDIA's networking catalog, for three reasons that compound: the MTEF-KIT family has a dozen near-identical members separated only by a letter, NVIDIA is mid-way through renumbering the whole catalog from Mellanox part numbers to its own, and NVIDIA's own manuals publish two different depth specifications for the same OPN. Below is the full crosswalk, the traps, and what to verify before a PO goes out.
What MTEF-KIT-J actually is
MTEF-KIT-J is a fixed — also called static — rack installation kit. The chassis bolts into position and stays there. It does not extend out of the rack on sliding rails, which means you cannot service the switch from the front without unracking it. That is deliberate: fixed kits are lighter, cheaper, take up no cable-management depth behind the chassis, and are the default in fabric deployments where a switch is racked once and touched again only on RMA.
If you need the chassis to slide out, MTEF-KIT-J is the wrong part and no amount of hardware substitution will fix it. You want the telescopic kit — MTEF-KIT-F — instead. This is worth stating plainly because "rail kit" is used loosely in the secondary market to mean both, and the two are not interchangeable.

A pattern worth noticing: the 930-9BRKT prefix marks the older Mellanox-era bracket kits, while 930-9NRKT marks the NVIDIA-era numbering. Both prefixes are current and in circulation. A quote citing either format is not automatically stale.
Trap 1: MTEF-KIT-C is a real part, and it is not MTEF-KIT-J
You will find sellers — and, until recently, our own listing — asserting that MTEF-KIT-C is not a genuine, distinct NVIDIA SKU. That is wrong, and we are correcting it here rather than quietly.
MTEF-KIT-C is documented in NVIDIA's QM87xx hardware user manual as OPN 930-9BRKT-00JF-000: "Static rack installation kit for 200G 1U systems to be mounted into 430-800mm depth racks." It is the fixed kit for the QM8700 and QM8790 HDR 200G InfiniBand switches. Its telescopic sibling in the same table is MTEF-KIT-F.
So if you are racking a Quantum HDR switch and someone quotes you MTEF-KIT-J, that is the wrong part number — even though both are static four-post kits covering an overlapping depth range, and even though the physical footprints are close enough that the confusion is understandable. Conversely, if you are racking an SN4700 and someone quotes MTEF-KIT-C, same problem in reverse.
The practical rule: match the kit to the switch family, not to the description. "Static, four-post, 430–800mm" describes at least two different NVIDIA part numbers.
Trap 2: NVIDIA publishes two depth ranges for the same part number
This one is genuinely NVIDIA's doing, and it is the single most common reason an MTEF-KIT-J order goes sideways.
In the SN3000 series manual, OPN 930-9NRKT-00JN-000 is described as: "NVIDIA 19" racks fixed mounting-kit, Standard-depth, Rack size 600-800mm."
In the SN4000 series manual, the identical OPN 930-9NRKT-00JN-000 is described as: "Static rack installation kit for 1U/2U systems into 4 poles, 430-800mm depth racks." The SN4700 fixed rail kit page repeats the 430–800mm figure directly.
Same part number. Same physical kit. Two published depth specifications with a 170mm gap between the minimums. The SN3700/SN3700C installation page adds a third data point, describing the procedure as covering 16.9–31.5" (430–800mm) racks while the accessory table in the same manual says 600–800mm.
The reconciliation is almost certainly this: the kit's slider hardware physically accommodates the full 430–800mm span, and 600–800mm is the range NVIDIA characterizes as "standard depth" and qualifies for a given platform. Both statements can be true at once — one describes mechanical capability, the other describes the supported envelope, exactly the way a transceiver's MSA reach and its vendor-qualified reach differ.
What to do about it: measure your actual post-to-post depth before ordering. If you are between 430mm and 600mm, you are in the region where NVIDIA's documentation disagrees with itself, and you should confirm fit against your specific chassis rather than trusting either number in isolation. Above 600mm, every NVIDIA source agrees and there is nothing to worry about.
Trap 3: SN3800 is listed by distributors, not by the SN3000 accessory table
Provantage, TES-IT and several other distributors list MTEF-KIT-J as covering the SN3800 alongside the SN3700 family. NVIDIA's SN3000 accessory and replacement parts table names only SN3700 and SN3700C against that OPN.
This is not necessarily a contradiction — the SN4000 manual's own description of the same kit reads "1U/2U systems," and the SN3800 is the 2U member of the Spectrum-2 line, so the mechanical case for it is straightforward. But it is a claim carried by the channel rather than by NVIDIA's published table, and it is worth treating as "verify before ordering" rather than as settled. If you are racking an SN3800, confirm against your chassis.
Installation notes worth knowing before the kit arrives
- Orientation is not optional. NVIDIA's installation procedure flags a critical orientation requirement: the slider components attach to the chassis in different orientations depending on whether you are mounting into a short-depth or standard-depth rack. Getting this backwards is the most common installation error on this kit, and it is not obvious from the parts alone.
- Eight cage nuts, in the designated 1U slots. The kit is positioned by cage nut placement, not by eyeballing the rail. Count them out before you start.
- Two people. NVIDIA specifies a two-person lift for mounting these chassis. An SN4600 or SN3800 at full population is not a one-person job, and a fixed kit gives you no intermediate resting position the way a telescopic rail does.
- Mount upright before insertion. The switch must be in its final upright position before it goes into the rails.
Why this part is hard to source
Rail kits are the classic accessory shortage: they carry almost no margin for the OEM, they are heavy and expensive to air-freight, and they are the first line cut when a switch platform's allocation gets tight. Meanwhile every Spectrum-2, Spectrum-3 and Quantum switch that ships into a build needs one, and the ones that arrive as secondary-market chassis frequently arrive without theirs — pulled, lost in a decom, or left bolted into the rack the switch came out of.
The result is a part that costs a fraction of the switch it holds and routinely holds up the deployment anyway. That is the gap we manufacture into.

How to verify the right kit in four steps
- Identify the switch model exactly — SN3700 and SN3700C take the same kit; SN3420 does not, despite the similar number. The suffix matters more than the family.
- Decide fixed or telescopic. If anyone will need to service the chassis in place, you need MTEF-KIT-F, not MTEF-KIT-J.
- Measure post-to-post rack depth. Anything under 600mm puts you in the range where NVIDIA's own documentation is inconsistent, and warrants a confirmation before ordering.
