Passive DAC vs. AOC — Which Is Right for Your Rack?
Passive DAC cables are the lowest-latency, most cost-effective choice for short-reach connections (typically 1–3m) within the same rack or adjacent racks. They draw minimal power and introduce no additional electronics between endpoints. Ideal for top-of-rack switch-to-server connections and spine-leaf patching at short distances.
Active Optical Cables (AOC) use fiber optics with integrated optics in the connector housing, making them the right choice for longer intra-data-center runs (up to 100m+). AOCs provide EMI immunity and allow flexible routing through tight cable management, making them a strong choice for inter-rack and mid-row connections in high-density AI GPU clusters.

Breakout DAC cables allow a single high-speed port to fan out to multiple lower-speed endpoints — a critical capability in AI training clusters built on NVIDIA DGX and HGX systems.
