Short answer: if your HPE documentation or riser calls for a keyed 8-pin GPU power connector, you need 871829-B21. If it calls for an unkeyed 8-pin, you need 871828-B21. If it calls for 6-pin connectors, you need 871830-B21. These three part numbers differ by a single digit and they are not substitutes for one another. For an NVIDIA data-center GPU (Tesla P40, P100, V100 PCIe, A30, A40, A100 PCIe) in a DL380 or DL385 Gen10, the answer is almost always 871829-B21.
If you only need to replace one damaged cable rather than buy a whole kit, the individual cable is 869820-001, and it is in stock at Resilient Tec for $49. The full 871829-B21 kit, three cables and two adapters, is $159.
That is the whole answer. The rest of this post is why the confusion exists and how to confirm you are ordering the right thing.
HPE publishes five graphics cable kits, and nobody tells you which is which
Installing a GPU in a ProLiant Gen10 server is not just a matter of seating the card. The accelerator needs auxiliary power routed from the riser, and HPE sells that cabling as a separate option kit. There are five of them:
| Option part number | Kit |
|---|---|
| 871828-B21 | HPE DL380 Gen10 8-Pin cable kit — not keyed |
| 871829-B21 | HPE DL380 Gen10 8-Pin keyed cable kit |
| 871830-B21 | HPE DL380 Gen10 8× 6-Pin cable kit |
| 874212-B21 | HPE GPU 6p×6p Y-Power cable kit |
| P03849-B21 | HPE GPU 2× 8-Pin cable kit |
This list appears in HPE's own product information reference for the DL380 Gen10 and essentially nowhere else. Most resellers list one of these part numbers with a stock photo and a one-line description, which leaves the buyer to work out the difference on their own. Some secondary-market listings even describe 871830-B21 as a drive-power kit for 8-bay SFF chassis.
Keyed versus unkeyed: the difference that matters
871828-B21 and 871829-B21 are one digit apart. The difference is the keying on the connector.
A keyed connector has a physical asymmetry moulded into the housing so it can only be inserted one way. An unkeyed connector does not. In a 2U chassis where you are reaching over a riser cage with limited sightlines, that keying is the difference between a connection you can trust and one you have to verify by feel.
If HPE's documentation for your configuration specifies the keyed kit, substituting the unkeyed one is not a cost saving. It is a different part.
Check the card, not the server
The GPU decides which kit you need, so start with the power input printed on your card's spec sheet:
- Data-center cards (the Tesla line, A30, A40, A100 PCIe) take an EPS-12V (CPU-style) 8-pin auxiliary power input. That is 871829-B21.
- Workstation cards (Quadro RTX 6000 and similar) take PCIe-style 8-pin and/or 6-pin graphics power. That is 871830-B21.
EPS 8-pin and PCIe 8-pin look nearly identical, but the 12V and ground pins sit in different positions and the plastic keying is different. The keying is there to stop you forcing the wrong one in. If a cable "almost fits," it is the wrong cable.
| 871829-B21 | 871830-B21 | |
|---|---|---|
| GPU-side connector | Keyed EPS-style 8-pin | PCIe-style graphics power (8-pin / 6-pin) |
| Typical cards | Tesla P40, P100, V100 PCIe, A30, A40, A100 PCIe | Workstation cards such as the Quadro RTX 6000 |
| Key spare cable | 869820-001 (8-pin keyed) | Different cable; not interchangeable with 869820-001 |
Which servers take 871829-B21
The keyed kit covers:
- HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10
- HPE ProLiant DL385 Gen10 and DL385 Gen10 Plus
- HPE ProLiant DL580 Gen10
- HPE Cloudline CL2800 Gen10
- HPE Nimble Storage dHCI Large Solution configurations built on DL380 Gen10
It does not cover the DL360 Gen10. That is a 1U chassis with a different riser arrangement, and it is a common wrong assumption because the model numbers are adjacent and both are Gen10.
Gen10 Plus, Gen11 and H100: different kits
Don't assume a Gen10 kit number carries over to newer servers. The Gen10 kit is not a substitute for any of these:
- P39102-B21 – 8-pin keyed GPU cable kit for DL380 Gen10 Plus, Gen11 and Gen12 (the counterpart to 871829-B21)
- P39100-B21 – DL300 Gen10 Plus GPU 2× 8-pin cable kit
- P59212-B21 – DL380 Gen10 Plus 8-pin/12-pin 2-way power cable kit for NVIDIA H100
- P61423-B21 – DL380 Gen10 Plus 8-pin/12-pin 3-way power cable kit for NVIDIA H100
The single-cable layer: 869820-001 and its four lookalikes
Inside the kit, the individual cable carries its own spare part number: 869820-001. HPE's spare description for it is CBL, PWR, GPU K80 to RISER, and it also carries a cable assembly number, 350732S00-245-G.
HPE's five-cable Gen10 GPU power spare kit, 875097-001, is where the lookalikes come from. They are all described in listings as GPU power cables and they are not interchangeable:
- 869820-001 – 8-pin keyed GPU cable. The one in 871829-B21, for Tesla and A-series data-center cards.
- 869821-001 – 8-pin GPU cable, not keyed. One digit from 869820-001 and the single most common wrong order.
- 869805-001 – 8-pin × 6-pin Y power cable
- 873193-001 – 6-pin × 6-pin Y power cable
- 869828-001 – short 8-pin to 10-pin GPU power adapter
Match on 869820-001 or on assembly number 350732S00-245-G. If the number stamped on your existing cable is anything else, it is a different part and you should confirm before ordering. You need one 869820-001 per 8-pin input on the card.
Kit or single cable? Run the numbers
At Resilient Tec pricing, the decision is arithmetic:
| What you need | Buy | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cable | 869820-001 single | $49 |
| 2 cables | 869820-001 × 2 | $98 |
| 3 or more cables, or a riser build from scratch | 871829-B21 kit | $159 |
The kit contains three cables and two adapters. Three singles cost $147 and include no adapters, so from three cables upward the kit is the better buy for $12 more. Below that, the single cable is cheaper and ships faster.
What else a DL380 Gen10 needs for a GPU
The power cable is the part people forget, but it is not the only one. A typical double-width GPU install in a DL380 Gen10 also calls for:
- A GPU riser cage (HPE 826694-B21) if the server doesn't already have a GPU-capable riser
- The high-performance heat sink kit (826706-B21) and high-performance fan kit (867810-B21). Passive data-center cards have no fan of their own.
- Enough power supply headroom. HPE offers 800W, 1600W and higher supplies; a 250–300W GPU plus two CPUs belongs on the larger end.
Always confirm the final list against the QuickSpecs for your exact chassis and riser layout.
A checklist before you order
- Check your GPU's power input: EPS-style 8-pin (data-center cards) or PCIe-style 8/6-pin (workstation cards).
- Check whether your riser documentation calls for keyed or unkeyed 8-pin, or 6-pin.
- Confirm your chassis is on the supported list, and specifically that it is not a DL360 Gen10.
- Confirm your generation. Gen10 takes 871829-B21; Gen10 Plus, Gen11 and Gen12 take P39102-B21.
- If you are replacing a cable rather than building from scratch, read the number off the old one and match 869820-001 or 350732S00-245-G exactly.
- Count how many cables you need. Three or more and the kit wins.
