Short answer: at 800G, copper DAC still wins on cost and power for short runs inside a rack (typically up to ~2m), but reach and signal integrity limits push you to active optical cables or transceivers for anything longer. Here's how to choose, with real, in-stock parts.
Why 800G breaks the "just use a DAC" rule
At 100G and 200G per lane, passive copper DACs stay clean well past 2 meters. At 800G (8x100G or 4x200G lanes), signal loss rises fast with cable length and connector count. Most passive 800G DACs top out around 1-2 meters before bit error rates climb high enough to hurt throughput and force retransmits. That's not a marketing rule of thumb — it's why switch and NIC vendors publish tight passive-copper reach tables for 800G links in the first place.
The practical takeaway: use passive copper for short, in-rack hops (switch-to-switch, switch-to-NIC within the same or adjacent rack), and move to optics for anything that has to cross the row, span racks, or run through a structured cabling plant.

400G QSFP-DD Ethernet: DAC for the rack, breakout for fan-out

When you need optics instead of copper
Once a link has to leave the rack — across a row, up to a spine layer, or through patch panels — copper DACs run out of reach and you move to pluggable transceivers over fiber. On NVIDIA OSFP fabrics that means an MMA4Z00-NS400 400G SR4 flat-top at the ConnectX-7 end and an MMA4Z00-NS 800G SR8 finned-top at the Quantum-2 end — the two are not interchangeable. What about 1.6T?
1.6T (OSFP1600/OSFP-XD, typically 8x200G lanes) is the next step defined for AI fabrics, and switch and optics vendors are sampling parts now. We don't stock 1.6T optics or DACs yet — the ecosystem is still early and pricing/availability isn't stable enough to recommend a specific part. If you're planning a build that will need to migrate to 1.6T later, the safest move today is to standardize on 400G/800G gear from vendors with a clear 1.6T roadmap, and re-evaluate the cable plant when 1.6T switch ports actually ship in volume. We'll update this guide with real SKUs once that happens.
One thing that saves headaches later: multi-vendor compatibility
Mixed-vendor fabrics (e.g., an NVIDIA NIC into a non-NVIDIA switch) can run into EEPROM vendor-ID checks that block an otherwise-compatible cable from linking up.
