Server memory has become the expensive part of a server. In-stock DDR4-2933 registered ECC memory costs about $1,150 to $1,320 for 128GB, based on listings tracked on October 18, 2026. A refurbished Dell PowerEdge R640 with 128GB already installed, plus two 12-core Xeon Gold processors, a cached RAID controller and four drives, is $2,472.50 at Resilient Tec. The memory alone is roughly half the price of the whole server. That changes the old rule of thumb that upgrading RAM is always the cheap option.
Below: what memory costs right now, when upgrading the server you have still wins, when buying a refurbished server with memory installed is the better deal, and what to check before you do either.
Short answer: small top-ups, upgrade; big upgrades on old hardware, replace
128GB installed in a refurbished R640 — $2,472.50 at Resilient Tec
If you need 128GB more in a server that is a generation or two old, the memory alone costs about half as much as a refurbished server that already has it. The server also brings newer processors, storage and a warranty. For a 16–64GB top-up on a platform you are keeping, buy the modules.

What 128GB of Server Memory Costs Right Now
These are in-stock DDR4 registered ECC (RDIMM) prices from a live price tracker on October 18, 2026:
| Module | Price per module | $/GB | Cost of 128GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 32GB DDR4-2933 RDIMM | $286–$293 | $8.95–$9.17 | ≈ $1,146–$1,174 (4 modules) |
| 64GB DDR4-2933 RDIMM | $644–$661 | $10.06–$10.33 | ≈ $1,287–$1,322 (2 modules) |
| 32GB DDR4-2666 RDIMM | $237–$350 | $7.40–$10.94 | ≈ $947–$1,400 (4 modules) |
| DDR4 median, all tracked listings | — | $9.17 | ≈ $1,174 |
Prices move daily and vary by brand and condition, but the order of magnitude is the point: about $9 a gigabyte. At that price, memory is no longer a rounding error on a server budget.
The Comparison: Memory Alone vs. a Server With Memory
| Cost | What you get | |
|---|---|---|
| 128GB DDR4-2933 RDIMM on its own | ≈ $1,146–$1,322 | Memory only. You install it in the server you have. |
| R640, 2× Gold 6226, 128GB, H740p, 4× 2TB SAS | $2,472.50 | 24 cores, 128GB installed and tested, 8GB-cache RAID, 8TB raw storage, 10GbE, iDRAC Enterprise, redundant power, lifetime warranty |
| R740xd GPU Ready, 2× Silver 4210R, 128GB | $2,995 | 20 cores, 128GB installed, 24 bays, GPU enablement kit, 2× 1600W supplies, lifetime warranty |
| R740xd GPU Ready, 2× Gold 6248, 128GB, H740p | $3,493.33 | 40 cores, 128GB installed, hardware RAID, GPU-ready, lifetime warranty |
On the R640, the 128GB of memory it ships with would cost about 46%–53% of the server's price if you bought it separately. On the base R740xd it is about 38%–44%. In both cases, the other half of the price buys a newer platform, storage, a RAID controller and a warranty.
When to Upgrade the Server You Have
- You need a small top-up. Adding 16–64GB costs a few hundred dollars, far less than a replacement.
- The processors still keep up. If your bottleneck is memory and not CPU, more memory fixes the actual problem.
- You have free slots of the right type. Dell PowerEdge servers don't allow RDIMMs and LRDIMMs to be mixed. Buy the type that's already installed, at a speed your processors support, and populate the channels in the order your manual gives.
- The platform is staying. A server you plan to retire in a year isn't worth $1,000+ of new memory.
When a Refurbished Server Is the Better Buy
- You need a large upgrade on an older generation. Adding 128GB to an older server means paying roughly half of a newer server's price for memory alone, on a platform with fewer years left.
- The old server needs more than memory. If you would also replace drives, the RAID controller or networking, the refurbished server includes them.
- You are short of slots. Filling the last slots of an older server often means removing smaller modules you then can't use. A server with 128GB installed leaves room to grow; the R640 and R740xd each have 24 DIMM slots.
- You want it tested together. Memory bought separately is one more part that can arrive mismatched. A built server ships with its memory installed and burned in.
Which Build for Which Job
- Virtualization and databases in 1U: the R640 with Gold 6226 and 128GB ($2,472.50), or the all-SSD version ($3,990.50) when storage latency matters. More detail in Dell PowerEdge R640 refurbished: configurations and prices.
- Storage-heavy or future GPU work in 2U: the R740xd GPU Ready ($2,995), or the Gold 6248 build ($3,493.33) for twice the cores and hardware RAID. See Custom Dell R740xd GPU servers.
- Need more than 128GB? Every build can ship with more memory installed. Ask for a quote and we will price the configuration before it ships.
FAQ
How much does 128GB of DDR4 server memory cost in October 2026?
About $1,150 to $1,320 for registered ECC DDR4-2933, based on in-stock listings tracked on October 18, 2026: four 32GB RDIMMs came to about $1,146–$1,174, and two 64GB RDIMMs to about $1,287–$1,322. The DDR4 median across tracked listings was $9.17 per GB. Prices vary by brand, speed and whether a module is new or refurbished.
Is it cheaper to buy a refurbished server than to upgrade RAM?
Not cheaper than the RAM alone, but often better value. A refurbished Dell PowerEdge R640 with two Xeon Gold 6226 processors, 128GB installed, a PERC H740p and four 2TB drives is $2,472.50 at Resilient Tec, about twice the cost of the 128GB of memory on its own, and it brings newer processors, a RAID controller, drives and a lifetime warranty. If your current server is an older generation and needs a large memory upgrade, replacing it often costs little more than upgrading it. (Prices checked October 19, 2026.)
When should I just upgrade the RAM in my existing server?
When you need a modest top-up (16–64GB), your server's processors still meet your needs, it has free DIMM slots, and it is a platform you plan to keep. Buy modules that match what's installed: same type (RDIMM or LRDIMM, never mixed), and a speed the processor supports.
Can I mix RDIMM and LRDIMM memory in a Dell PowerEdge server?
No. Dell PowerEdge servers do not support mixing registered (RDIMM) and load-reduced (LRDIMM) modules in the same system. Match the module type already installed, and populate DIMMs in the channel order your server's manual specifies.
Is DDR4 still cheaper than DDR5 for servers?
Per gigabyte, DDR4 server memory generally remains the cheaper option in 2026, which is part of why refurbished DDR4 platforms such as the PowerEdge R640 and R740xd are good value. The trade-off is an older processor generation and lower memory bandwidth than current DDR5 platforms.
