Ask any network engineer who has deployed active optical cables at scale, and you'll hear some version of the same story: two AOCs with identical part numbers, ordered from the same listing, and one comes up clean while the other throws "unsupported transceiver" or gets flagged with corrupted DOM data. The optics look the same. The label looks the same. But the EEPROM behind that label — the small chip that tells your switch what the module is, who made it, and what it's allowed to do — was written somewhere in a supply chain the buyer never actually saw.
Short answer: what to buy and what it costs
AOCs at Resilient Tec: 25G from $59 · 100G $140 · 200G HDR $989.89
The 25G and 100G cables are compatible AOCs with EEPROMs coded and tested for the switch you name; the 200G HDR cable is NVIDIA/Mellanox-branded.

That's the real frustration underneath most AOC compatibility complaints. It's rarely about the fiber or the laser drivers themselves; it's about not knowing who coded the module, on what equipment, against which firmware revision, and whether anyone tested it on live gear before it shipped. When something goes wrong six months into production, "contact the marketplace seller" is not a support plan.
Why the source of the programming matters
EEPROM coding is what makes an AOC "Mellanox," "Cisco," or "Arista" compatible in the first place — it's how the host reads vendor ID, part number, and DOM calibration data over I2C at boot. If that data is written inconsistently, copied from an outdated image, or applied by a facility with no accountability back to the buyer, the failure shows up on your rack, not theirs. Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) compliance and ISO 9001 quality management aren't just certifications for a spec sheet — they're evidence that someone is actually controlling that process batch to batch.
What a single, accountable source actually buys you
Every AOC we carry is sourced from a single, vertically integrated manufacturing partner that produces the fiber, the optics, and the EEPROM programming under one roof — not assembled in one facility and coded in another with no one accountable for the handoff. Each cable is ISO 9001, RoHS, and MSA compliant, and tested on live network equipment before it ever leaves the factory. That means when you call us with a compatibility question, you're not being routed to a support queue in a different time zone reading from a script — you're talking to someone who can trace the part back to a known, tested process.
That accountability is the actual product here. It's why we back every AOC cable with a lifetime warranty with no registration or expiration, why every cable is coded for your specific platform before it ships, and why "not sure if this will work in my switch" gets answered with a phone call, not a guess.
If you're specifying AOC cables for a production spine-to-leaf run or an AI cluster interconnect and want to know exactly who stands behind the EEPROM before you deploy it, browse our AOC Cables collection or call 888-442-3849 — we'll confirm compatibility with your exact hardware before you buy, not after it fails.
