Who It's For
- VMware ESXi, Proxmox or Hyper-V hosts running a few dozen VMs in 1U
- Database, ERP and line-of-business application servers
- Cluster nodes where rack space and power are tight
- Teams replacing an older R630 or R620 without a lead-time wait
Why 128GB Installed Matters Right Now
Server memory prices rose sharply through 2025 and 2026, and new Dell servers are taking weeks to arrive. This build ships with 128GB already installed and tested. Buying that memory on its own costs a meaningful share of this server's price.
Customize It
The R640 has 24 memory slots and four open drive bays. We can add memory, swap the SAS drives for SSDs, fill the open bays or change the networking to 25GbE before it ships. Request a quote with what you need.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is this different from R640 #3?
Same processors, memory, controller and networking. This one uses four 2TB spinning SAS drives (8TB raw), and #3 uses four 1.92TB SATA SSDs for faster storage.
What does the PERC H740p add?
Hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60 with 8GB of non-volatile cache. Writes stay fast and protected during a power loss.
Is 128GB enough for virtualization?
For most small and mid-size clusters, yes. With 24 memory slots, there's plenty of room to grow later.
Can I add a GPU?
Yes, a low-profile one. Dell supports the NVIDIA T4 16GB in the R640: up to three cards with both processors installed. Each draws 70W from its slot, so no GPU power cables are needed. Double-width cards like the A40 or V100 won't fit a 1U chassis, so see our R740xd GPU builds for those. Tell us your card and we'll confirm the fit.
Does it come with an operating system?
No. It supports Windows Server, VMware ESXi, Proxmox and major Linux distributions. iDRAC Enterprise lets you install remotely.
What warranty applies?
The Resilient Tec lifetime warranty. If something fails, we send an advance replacement when we have one in stock, or repair or replace it with an equivalent.
