Use Case: Solving Common Storage Challenges

This drive addresses three common enterprise storage needs: expanding usable 3.5in LFF capacity in existing arrays without a full chassis replacement, replacing failed drives in Dell, HPE, or Cisco UCS bays at well below OEM pricing, and providing bulk near-line storage for backup targets, media archives, surveillance/NVR systems, and cold-data tiers where 7200 RPM performance and 12Gb/s SAS throughput are sufficient.

Cross-Brand Drive Compatibility

Same drive class: 16TB, SAS 12Gb/s, 7200 RPM, 512e, 3.5in LFF, CMR

Server Platform Option Part Numbers

Same drive class used across these chassis (16TB / SAS 12G / 7.2K / 512e / 3.5in LFF)

Note: OEM-branded drives (Dell, HPE, Cisco) ship with vendor-specific firmware for backplane signaling, drive health reporting, and RAID controller integration. This Toshiba MG08SCA16TE is electrically and mechanically compatible with the same SAS 12Gb/s, 3.5in LFF, 512e bays used across these platforms. Confirm your RAID controller supports generic/non-OEM drives (or use HBA/JBOD mode) if OEM firmware validation is required.

MG08SCA16TE vs MG09SCA18TE

Toshiba's MG08 and MG09 Enterprise Capacity families share the same 3.5-inch, SAS 12Gb/s, 7200 RPM, helium-sealed platform, so the decision mostly comes down to capacity and recording technology rather than day-to-day performance. The MG08SCA16TE tops out at 16TB using conventional magnetic recording (CMR) across 8-9 platters. The MG09SCA18TE reaches 18TB by adding an extra platter and using Toshiba's flux-control MAMR (FC-MAMR) recording technology to push areal density higher while remaining CMR-based (no shingled writes).

Because both drives are physically and electrically drop-in compatible with the same 3.5in SAS bays, choosing between them usually comes down to cost per terabyte versus future headroom. The MG08SCA16TE is typically the better value when you're topping off an existing array or replacing a failed 16TB drive. The MG09SCA18TE makes more sense when you're planning capacity 3-5 years out and want to reduce the number of bays or enclosures needed for a given amount of storage.

Which Dell PowerEdge Servers Support the MG08SCA16TE?

The MG08SCA16TE is a standard 3.5in LFF, SAS 12Gb/s drive, so it fits any Dell PowerEdge chassis configured with 3.5in LFF SAS/SATA backplanes across the 13th through 16th generation lineups. Commonly deployed platforms include:

• 13th Gen: PowerEdge R730, R730xd, R530, T430, T630
• 14th Gen: PowerEdge R740, R740xd, R540, T440, T640
• 15th Gen: PowerEdge R750, R750xd, R550, T550, R7515, R7525
• 16th Gen: PowerEdge R760, R760xd, R660, T560

A few things to confirm before ordering: make sure your specific chassis SKU was built with the 3.5in LFF backplane (many of these models also ship in 2.5in SFF configurations that won't accept this drive), and use a Dell drive tray or caddy (see the part numbers above) since Dell backplanes require Dell-specific carriers. The drive works in PERC hardware RAID or HBA330/HBA355 passthrough mode; see the firmware and RAID compatibility section below for details on non-OEM drive handling.

How to Verify a Refurbished Toshiba MG08 Drive Using SMART Data

Because the MG08SCA16TE is a SAS drive rather than SATA, it reports health through SCSI log pages instead of the ATA SMART attribute table you may be used to from consumer drives. The standard tool for reading this data is smartmontools (smartctl), version 7.0 or later for full SAS support.

1. Install smartmontools and run sudo smartctl -a -d scsi /dev/sdX, replacing /dev/sdX with the drive's device path.
2. Check SMART Health Status - this should read "OK". Anything else means the drive has flagged itself as failing.
3. Compare Current Drive Temperature against Drive Trip Temperature - a healthy drive under load should run well below its trip point.
4. Look at Elements in grown defect list - this should be at or near zero. A rising count over time indicates media wear.
5. Review the Error counter log for read, write, and verify operations, and confirm Total uncorrected errors is 0.
6. Check Non-medium error count - a low number is normal; a high count can point to cabling, backplane, or HBA issues rather than the drive itself.
7. Note Accumulated start-stop cycles and power-on hours for context on how the drive was used previously, and ask your seller for this information if it isn't already disclosed.
8. For extra confidence, run a full self-test with sudo smartctl -t long -d scsi /dev/sdX and check the results afterward in the self-test log.

Every refurbished drive from Resilient Tec is already tested against these criteria before being listed, but running your own smartctl check on arrival is good practice for any enterprise drive purchase.

MG08SCA16TE Firmware, Sector Size (512e vs 4Kn), and RAID Compatibility

Sector format: This drive is the 512e variant, meaning it uses 4096-byte physical sectors internally but presents 512-byte logical sectors to the host for backward compatibility. That makes it a safe drop-in replacement for older RAID controllers, BIOS, and operating systems that expect 512-byte sectors, with only a small potential write-amplification penalty on unaligned I/O (which modern OSes avoid by default through proper partition alignment). A separate 4Kn version of this drive family exists for environments that support native 4K sectors, but it requires UEFI boot and OS/controller support that 512e does not.

Firmware: This is a generic (non-OEM-locked) Toshiba drive, so it runs Toshiba's standard firmware rather than a Dell/HPE/Cisco-branded firmware build. You can check the installed firmware revision with smartctl -i -d scsi /dev/sdX, which reports the Firmware Version field alongside the drive's model and serial number.

RAID compatibility: Hardware RAID controllers such as Dell PERC, HPE Smart Array, and Broadcom/LSI MegaRAID generally accept non-OEM enterprise SAS drives, though some controllers show a "non-certified drive" notice or disable OEM-specific features like predictive failure alerts tied to vendor firmware IDs. For the broadest compatibility - particularly with ZFS, Ceph, or software RAID - set the controller to HBA/IT mode and let the OS manage the array directly, since the MG08SCA16TE doesn't depend on any OEM identification string to function.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it work in a Dell, HPE or Cisco server?
Yes, in 3.5-inch SAS bays, but you need that server maker's drive tray. Most RAID controllers accept generic enterprise SAS drives, though some show a non-certified drive notice or switch off vendor-specific alerts.

What does 512e mean?
The drive stores data in 4K physical sectors but presents 512-byte logical sectors to the host, so it works with RAID controllers and operating systems that expect 512-byte sectors.

What warranty and shipping come with it?
Resilient Tec's lifetime warranty. US standard shipping is free with no minimum, and orders typically arrive in 3 to 5 days.
